Description
Montenegro. Order of Prince Danilo I, II Class Commander set, II Model (1861-1918), by Vinzenz Mayer's Soehne of Vienna. The badge of multi-piece construction in silver with red, white and blue enamels, bearing Austrian hallmarks: a dog's head for .800 silver and a Diana's head (in use 1872-1922) with the fineness numeral "3" and the Vienna assay letter "A", the ring maker-marked "VM"; it measures 50.2 x 74.5 mm including its crown suspension and is worn on a full-length neck ribbon. The breast star likewise of multi-piece construction, a silver cross enamelled in red, white and blue with gold cypher and lettering, mounted on a sixteen-pointed star, the pin twice marked with the Vienna "A" and the reverse cartouche marked "VINC. MAYER'S SOEHNE WIEN"; it measures 72.2 x 73 mm, with vertical pinback. Instituted by Prince Danilo I in 1853. Very minor contact to the red enamel of the badge's obverse centre, otherwise near extremely fine condition.
