German Orders, Decorations & Militaria of the Second World War
Paterson Auctioneers is pleased to present a comprehensive sale of German militaria from the Second World War, some 140 lots spanning the orders, decorations, insignia and headgear of the period. Drawn from a range of consignments and private sources, the auction offers advanced collectors and newcomers alike a rare depth of material across every major category, much of it in exceptional, unissued condition. Leading the sale is a hand-signed appointment document of Adolf Hitler, dated 1935 and issued in his capacity as Führer and Reich Chancellor, a significant piece of primary historical documentation. Among the higher awards are examples of the Order of the German Eagle in silver-gilt and enamel by Gebrüder Godet of Berlin, together with Iron Crosses of both the 1914 and 1939 patterns and a strong run of War Merit Crosses. Cloth insignia forms a particular strength, headlined by rare Waffen-SS collar tabs, "Germania" cuff titles, mountain-troop edelweiss and a Croatian volunteer arm shield, alongside Heer and Luftwaffe breast eagles and flight badges. Headgear highlights include officer's field and visor caps, a scarce double-decal police helmet and a Gendarmerie shako. The sale is rounded out by combat and campaign badges, including infantry and general assault badges, wound badges, and Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe war badges, together with the Cross of Honour of the German Mother, sports and proficiency awards, and a selection of international pieces including Hungarian, French and American insignia. Every lot has been carefully catalogued with attention to construction, maker's marks and condition, and is offered as a historical artifact of its era, of interest to collectors, museums and students of twentieth-century history.
