Description
Spain, Kingdom. Royal and Distinguished Order of Charles III, Grand Cross set, a rare French-made variant by Lemaitre of Paris. The Grand Cross badge of multi-piece construction in gold with blue and white enamels, the obverse centre with a raised, painted image of the Virgin Mary, suspended from a wreath, unmarked; it measures 42.7 x 60.5 mm including the suspension and is on its original full-length sash. The breast star also of multi-piece construction, a gold insignia enamelled in blue, white and green with a painted image of the Virgin Mary, mounted on a silver star, unmarked, with vertical pinback flanked by twin prongs; it measures 76.3 x 81.8 mm. Founded by King Charles III in 1771, the order ranks among Spain's most prestigious distinctions. Extremely fine condition.
