German 1914 Iron Cross, I Class, Screwback

Germany, Prussia. Iron Cross 1914, I Class, screwback version (Eisernes Kreuz 1914 I. Klasse an Schraubscheibe), reinstituted 5 August 1914 by Kaiser Wilhelm II. A cross pattée with a blackened magnetic iron core in a ribbed silver frame, the obverse with a central 'W', a crown to the upper arm and '1914' to the lower, the reverse with a central threaded lug retaining its period backplate and nut and stamped '800' for silver content to the lower arm. Measures 42.32 x 42.70 mm and weighs 24.8 grams with hardware; minor loss of finish to the core. A high-quality example in near extremely fine condition.
