Spain. Order of Civil Merit, reduced-size Grand Cross star, circa 1930, in silver gilt. Established in 1926 by King Alfonso XIII to honour outstanding civil service to the Spanish state, the Grand Cross is among the order's highest grades; reduced-size stars were made for ease of wear while retaining the prestige of the full-size insignia.
